PEORIA, IL. -- Millions of people are estimated to have logged on to the Health Insurance Exchange during the first week of enrollment, yet a majority had trouble signing up.

A new AP poll of 1200 adults finds seven percent had someone in their household try to sign up for insurance on the exchanges.

When applied to the general population -- that could be as many as 20-million people.

However, 3 out of 4 respondents had trouble signing up, and only one in ten successfully brought insurance.

But, Peoria NAACP President Don Jackson says people should not be afraid of those statistics, or to surf the exchange.

All they've talked about is the glitches in the program. They have not talked about the successful people who actually went on the net and got insurance and got it at a fair price. And unfortunately it is causing interpretation among people because their afraid they are going to get on and get caught in those glitches. I just wish they would accentuate those positives instead of the negatives," Don Jackson, President, Peoria NAACP.

Saturday, October 12 the NAACP and Peoria Progressive Golf Club are hosting a free health fair in hopes of educating the uninsured about the Affordable Care Act.

An ACA counselor will be on hand to answer questions and help attendees with both online and paper enrollment.

"Well they'll be able to be exposed to what is available under the Affordable Care Act. But more importantly the fair is an opportunity for someone who may have an ailment to get screened for it in our office, in a much friendlier setting so to say, and if they have a problem it will be exposed."

Attendees can also receive health screenings such blood pressure and cholesterol checks and mammograms.

The Health Fair runs from 10 am to 3 pm at the NAACP office MacArthur Highway in Peoria.
