GALESBURG, Ill -- City officials were notified recently by Kohl's that they have delayed the building of a new store in Galesburg.

Mayor Salvador Garza said in a release that Kohl's told him that they would be reducing their new store openings to 12 in 2013 and that it is not the right time for a store in Galesburg.

"We were all looking forward to seeing the new Kohl's store open soon and we're understandably disappointed by the delay," Garza said.  "However, we will continue to work with Kohl's to realize this opportunity as well as continue to work with other retail development interests that are attracted to this area."

Mike Patterson, Director of Development for Horne Properties who sold the 4.65 acre site to Kohl's expressed similar disappointment, but believes that Galesburg is still a good fir for Kohl's.

"This decision by Kohl's does not appear to be a direct reflection of the Galesburg market," Patterson said.  "I believe it has more to do with the overall volatility and uncertainty within the U.S. economy."
