CANTON, Ill. -- New housing coming to Canton will bring in about 100 new construction jobs.

Brinshore Development and Laborers' Home Development broke ground Tuesday on the $7 million housing project.

Forty-two townhomes and a community center will be built along along Ash Street for residents and veterans.

"Schools are right down the street, there's a YMCA down the street, there's retail, there's a supermarket right next door in close proximity to other retail," said David Brint of Brinshore Development. "There's easy access to the main roads and there's also open space."

"I think it's a direct result of what we're seeing in the growth of the economy here," said Canton Mayor Kevin Meade. "The jobs are coming, over $100 million in investment in the last four years. This is a natural outgrowth."

The townhomes are expected to be built by spring of next year.

Some could be ready for move-in by this November.
