SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Illinois drivers can nudge the pedal more into 2014. The state speed limit on interstates will increase 5 miles per hour from 65 mph to 70 mph on January 1, 2014.

However, an Illinois Department of Transportation representative said it may take a few weeks for all signage to be updated.

Eight counties near the city of Chicago are allowed to opt out of the 70 miles per hour limit.
