SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Drivers may want to think twice before flicking that cigarette butt out the window.

A new law in Illinois makes tossing cigarettes illegal, and could come with hefty penalties.

A first time offender would get a class B misdemeanor with fines up to $1500 dollars.

Get caught three times, and you could face a class 4 felony, with a $2500 dollar fine and up to three years in prison.

The new law takes effect January 1.
