PEORIA, Ill. -- A sure sign spring is here, the Peoria Journal Star Peoria County spelling bee aired Saturday morning.
Now, there is a new spelling champion in the area.
Out of 18 spellers, ranging from fourth through eighth grade, Mossville Elementary eighth grader John Offutt spelled "tortuous" for the win, after seven rounds.
"Some of the words the other kids got, I don't think I would have gotten," said Offutt, "but I don't know I guess I'm just lucky."
Second place went to Monroe Elementary school student Jenna Mirande.
Offutt will be back next week to compete in the grand spelling bee for the spot to go to Washington D.C. For the Scripps National Bee.
