PEORIA, Ill. -- Hostess Brands, Incorporated plans to potentially lay off more than 1,000 employees at its commercial bakeries in Peoria and Chicago.

According to figures released in the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity's monthly mass layoff report, Hostess is one of 5 companies intending to trim or eliminate their workforce.

Hostess cites restructuring as the cause for the possible layoffs.

The company filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.

Atotal of 189 Peoria employees would be let go if the plant was closed down.

Other local lay offs include G and D Integrated, which plans to dismiss 189 employees.

May's monthly tally of 1,542 layoffs makes for the third highest of 2012.

Only April and January had higher numbers.
