PEORIA, Ill -- A local food rescue program is living a Robin Hood lifestyle and helping the hungry in Central Illinois.
This is the 20th year Heart of Illinois Harvest has been supplying local food kitchens for free distribution to those in need.
The not-for-profit program accepts food donations from restaurants and stores then delivers the food with the help of 70 volunteers.
Co-Chairman Bill Lervaag says they always know where the food is going, but sometimes have a hard time finding a source.
Lervaag says, "We're basically always out looking for new supply sources, and I can't tell you that there's any bigger need on Christmas or Thanksgiving as there is on a daily basis."
Meal centers we've spoken with say they are grateful for the accomplishments of HOI Harvest in it's 20 years of service.
