EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- Police officers from across central Illinois packed a local steakhouse Friday afternoon but they weren't there to eat lunch. They were there to serve lunch.
Officers from four police departments served pulled pork sandwiches to customers at the Texas Roadhouse in East Peoria.
Instead of paying for their food, diners were asked to leave a donation for Special Olympics Illinois.
"This money pays for 100 percent of their training, their competitions. So they get to do all these things at no cost to the families because of these donations,” said Illinois State Police Trooper Dustin Pierce.
Trooper Pierce said this year’s event raised $8,045, exceeding their goal of $7,500.
Last year, the East Peoria restaurant was the top fund-raising location in the state. It is unknown at this time who the top fundraiser this year.
