SOUTH AFRICA -- NBC News is reporting that Oscar Pistorius, the first double amputee to run in the Olympics, has been charged with murder.

Pistorius was arrested in the shooting death of his girlfriend in his native South Africa.

Media outlets have reported that he may have mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder.

However, authorities have said that they have been called to Pistorius' home before due to domestic issues.

Pistorius became known to millions when he ran in the 2012 Olympics wearing carbon fiber prosthetic legs.
