PEORIA, Ill. -- On the tail end of a week filled with crime, another deadly shooting has shaken a family already in mourning.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll said Melvin Sanders Jr., 25, was killed and another person was wounded in a shooting on Saturday night.

The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. at 1618 South Stanley Street, the home of Malinda Smith.

Smith is the mother KeiAmber Beard, who was murdered in a home invasion on Thursday alongside her boyfriend.

Ingersoll said Sanders Jr. was shot multiple times.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Peoria police said a second victim was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head.

His name is not being released.

Neighbor Ernest Heyes said he was watching tv when he heard approximately seven shots fired.

Heyes said he crawled out his front door to see what was happening and saw two dark-colored cars speed past.

“It was kind of terrifying because there’s so much killing going on right now you don’t know who to trust," Heyes said. "I seen them down there hollering and hoopin’ and crying and then just cops coming for every direction and I’m glad they did because it was starting to get like a war.”

Peoria Police have arrested one suspect in the investigation.
