PEORIA, Ill. -- One man is dead, and three others injured after a large house fire in Peoria early Saturday morning.
Shortly after 3 this morning, firefighters were called to 427 South Shelly Street. When they arrived, Phonecia Nichols, one of the home's residents, was outside. Her leg was injured, after falling from the home's front stoop.
Nichols told firefighters her husband and son may still be in the house. After a brief search, authorities found 43-year old George Nichols unresponsive in the home's basement. He was carried outside, and taken by ambulance to OSF St. Francis Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. Two firefighters were also injured in the blaze. They have since been treated. Damage to the home is estimated at $7,000.
