PEORIA, Ill -- The trial of the man accused of killing another man during an illicit deal got underway on Tuesday.
Robert C. Nunn Jr., 18, was arrested June 7 of this year in connection to the murder, which occurred on May 31.
In opening statements, State's Attorney Nancy Mermelstein said that Nunn and his accomplice Sergio Heron, 19, planned to rob Kelin Drummond,19, and a friend during a drug deal.
Drummond was found shot in a vehicle on the 2700 block of Latrobe Street by police officers. Mermelstein said that Nunn called police from Heron's house claiming to be the victim of a crime.
Mermelstein said that the evidence will show that Nunn shot first. The wounds sustained by Nunn in the shooting were due to Drummond trying to protect himself with a gun he brought with him to the meeting.
Defense Attorney Will Loeffel said that Nunn and Herron were actually selling a gun to Drummond and his friend.
Loeffel said that Drummond felt he was deceived by Nunn and Heron about the caliber of weapon that was for sale and opened fire, forcing Nunn to defend himself.
