CHICAGO -- The United States Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday that over 61,000 Illinois residents have enrolled for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act since October 1.

The HHS says that enrollment increased significantly in December following improvements to the website.

“While we are encouraged by the almost eight-fold increase in Marketplace enrollments in December, there’s still much more work to do to reach Illinois’ uninsured population,” said Jennifer Koehler, Executive Director of Get Covered Illinois (GCI). “

The next deadline is coming up this week with January 15 coming as the last date on which consumers can apply for coverage that begins on February 1. The full enrollment period for the Marketplace lasts six months and runs through March 31.
