Overturned semi sends cattle into roadway, halts traffic on I-39 (with photos)

EL PASO, Ill. -- A semi tractor trailer overturned Thursday morning on Interstate 39 near El Paso sending cattle into the roadway and halting traffic in both directions.

The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. and sent about 35 cattle into the roadway, at least six were hit by cars and had to be put down.

There is no word on injuries to motorists.

The interstate was closed for several hours as crews worked to clean up the scene.
