PEORIA, Ill. -- Over a half a million passengers arrived and departed from the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport in 2012, an increase over 2011's numbers.
According to a recent press release, the airport saw a total of 580,530 passengers, which is a 13 percent increase and surpasses the old record by over 2. 5 percent.
Director of Airports Gene Olson attributes PIA's success to what he considers two major factors.
"Central Illinois has shown terrific support of the new service offerings established during 2012 to Atlanta and Punta Gorda/Fort Myers, Florida; and the new terminal building has enabled us to keep our cost structures low," said Olson. "The worldwide connections and direct flights available from PIA are providing passengers with access to the business and vacation destinations they need and want."
The previous record was set in 2008.
