SPRINGFIELD, Ill -- A bi-partisan legislative panel Thursday rejected the idea of closing the Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln and the Jacksonville Developmental Center.

Governor Pat Quinn had called for closing those facilities and others... laying off some two thousand state workers.

But, the vote by the Commission on Government Accounting and Accountability is strictly a recommendation.

The Quinn administration seems to be softening its position on the closing of Jacksonville, Logan and five other state facilities.

A spokeswoman for the Governor says a new plan would close four of eight developmental centers serving the mentally handicapped over the next two and a half years, but would close no prisons.
