EAST PEORIA Ill -- Taking advantage of Saturday's pleasant weather was at the forefront of some community members helping to clean up a local park.
It's part of the annual Kiwanis International community service day.
For the 4th year in a row, the Peoria Downtown Kiwanis Club chose the Hooked on Fishing Park in East Peoria.
Nearly 25 volunteers pitched in, raking up leaves and cleaning up the lakeside.
The park is home to the Hooked on Fishing Program, teaching area children lessons on the sport and the outdoors.
"It feels pretty good. We are Kiwanians because we love to do service," said Peoria Kiwanis Club President, Natalie Hughes. "It's our motto to help one child and one community at a time and change the world, so it feels nice to know we are really helping a program that's going to help a lot of kids."
"You really start planting roots at an early age to get kids to help out in the community, and Kiwanis has been very instrumental in the Peoria area," said work event organizer, Stephen Jackson. "To see college kids, high school kids, and adults giving up their weekends after having busy weeks, is really touching."
The Hooked on Fishing Park will open for the season in the coming weeks.
