PEORIA, Ill. -- Emergency crews are facing off in Pekin for the Battle of the Badges Blood drive.

The annual event is a friendly competition between the Pekin Fire and Police Department.

Each hoping to bring in more blood donors than other.

While crucial bragging rights are on the line, the Pekin Fire Chief says the prize is ensuring lifesaving blood transplants are available for patients in need.

"Whether or not you have catastrophes like we've had recently or just in normal times, people need blood all the time," said Pekin Fire Chief Kurt Nelson. "We just think it's a good thing that we try to push that and get people to come in and actually give blood."

At the close of the drive 48 pints had been brought in, with the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office bringing in the most donations with 20 units.
