PEKIN, Ill. -- One area business owner discovered if you want something done quickly, you might have to do it yourself.

On Wednesday, Albert Zeller, owner of Avanti's Restorante Corporation, cut the ribbon to open the new extension of Griffin Avenue in Pekin.

The road allows easy access from Veterans Drive to the Avanti's Dome.

Zeller put up the million dollars needed to build the half mile street.

The city will reimburse him for the cost.

The city manager said without the donation, it would have taken longer to get the project done.

"The funding and availability these days, the highways and the streets are being looked at more as a public/private partnership stand point and this was a great opportunity for the city of Pekin," said Joe Wuellner, Pekin City Manager.

The road opens up the area for further development and possibly a new hotel to service the Avanti's Dome.

Next week a north extension of Veterans Drive will open and construction of a southern addition of that road will soon start.
