Pekin volunteer receives Spotlight on Service award

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Barbara Worner of the YWCA in Pekin was honored Thursday as one of 10 volunteer tutors to receive the 2013 Spotlight on Service award from Secretary of State Jesse White.

The award, is part of the 2013 Spotlight on Literacy Awards which recognize outstanding students and volunteer tutors in Illinois literacy programs.

“I am proud to recognize our outstanding volunteer tutors for helping students achieve their utmost potential,” said White. “ I believe each of us should give something back to our neighbors and our communities, and these tutors are a wonderful example of the positive impact that comes from volunteerism."

The award winners were recognized at a ceremony at the Illinois State Library in Springfield.

Spotlight on Service winners received $200 from the Illinois Press Association foundation, which will be awarded to the literacy program for which they volunteer, a plaque and personalized Illinois Blue Book.
