Pentagon Chief lifts ban on women in combat

WASHINGTON, DC -- NBC News is reporting that Pentagon Chief Leon Panetta has decided to lift the ban on women in combat.

The move will allow women to select positions in ground combat units.

NBC News says that the announcement will open approximately 237,000 individual jobs to women across service branches, including 5,000 positions for female Marines in ground combat elements.

A formal announcement is expected to be made on Thursday.
