CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Illinois Department of Employment Security announced Thursday that the January local unemployment rates have raised in seven of 12 metros in the last year.
Peoria's rate rose from 9.1 percent in January of 2012 to 10 percent in January 2013. The 10 percent number is up significantly from December's rate of 8.3 percent.
Bloomington-Normal's unemployment rate dropped slightly compared to January 2012, from 7.9 percent to 7.7 percent. However, Bloomington-Normal has also seen an increase from December 2012, which was at 6.3 percent.
The IDES says that increases in the unemployment rate and newly created jobs are expected in January.
