PEORIA, Ill. -- The Peoria City Council horseshoe is full once again.

Tuesday night council members unanimously approved Elizabeth Jensen to fill the open at-large seat.

The seat was left vacant after councilman Gary Sandberg died in July.

Mayor Jim Ardis said narrowing down the field of 31 applicants was not easy, but he is happy with the outcome.

"I think after a lot of strong discussion by the council that the person who was, or will be tonight, is someone who has the best interest of our city at heart," said Ardis.

"I hope to bring my perspective as a resident of an older neighborhood, living in an old historic home, in a historic district, so I am hoping to bring that perspective and the understanding of the older neighborhoods in the city and how they really contribute to the vitality and health of our city," said Jensen.

Jensen's appointment is effective immediately.
