PEORIA, Ill-- Peoria County jail officials have made changes in policies and procedures designed to improve healthcare and treatment for inmates.
Sheriff Mike McCoy says that means now there will be medical staff available 24 hours a day seven days a week.
In addition to doctors visiting 3 to 5 times a week, a mental health professional will also be available to treat inmates.
"Every time something happens to somebody prior to our contracting for care it was a trip to the hospital and now we don't have to do that. Now we have professionals on site and that makes a huge difference," he said.
According to the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare, the two year undertaking makes the jail an accredited system.
