PEORIA, Ill. -- Despite the weather, many families made it out to see animals at the zoo. The Peoria Zoo hosted its Year of the Horse Celebration this morning.

Kids learned about the Chinese New Year and about the animals in the Chinese Zodiac. This is the year of the horse, but it was not the only focus of the event. The children were able to meet the zoo's pony, zebra and rabbit.

"The animal connection is really important to us. We'll go behind the scenes and meet the zebra and the horse. We want kids to appreciate what it takes to take care of the animals," said Jessica Kauzlarich Peoria Zoo Educator.

"It's actually really exciting," said Peoria mother Jessica Mitchell. "It's something great to do during the winter, to help pass the time when we're stuck inside."
