PEORIA, Ill. -- Peoria physician, Dr. Stephen Cullinan has been ordered to give up his license to practice medicine and pay a $30,000 fine.
Dr. Cullinan, 67, reportedly retired from medical practice last year. His attorneys had settled a wrongful death lawsuit for over $735,000 in 2011. The lawsuit involved the death of a Sangamon County jail inmate who was treated by Dr. Cullinan in 2007.
Inmate Maurice Burris died of a perforated ulcer and septic shock. Published reports indicate Dr. Cullinan had prescribed over-the-counter drugs.
Dr. Cullinan was also reprimanded for a case involving a Macoupin County jail inmate, who had to have a leg amputated.
He was also involved in malpractice cases in both Michigan and Oklahoma for withholding drugs from patients.
