PEORIA, Ill -- A Peoria man was shot in the left leg Tuesday night after the suspect attempted to rob him.
The victim told police that he had been drinking that night at a bar near his home on Olive. After walking back to his home, realized that he only had one cigarette left. He decided to walk to the gas station on Western.
On his way, he was approached from behind by the suspect, who asked him for a cigarette. The victim said the only one he had was the one he was smoking. The suspect asked him to give him that one.
The victim turned to walk away and heard two shots, one of which struck him in the leg. He was able to run home to his home. When he woke up in the morning, he realized he had been shot and went to the hospital.
The victim said he lost the cigarette and a few dollars in cash, but was unsure if those were taken from him or dropped as he made his escape.
