PEORIA, Ill. -- A local man is lucky to be alive after Police say a train literally ran over the top of him while he was asleep on the railroad tracks.

Peoria firefighters were called to the railroad tracks near Washington and Sanger Streets around 6:00 a.m.

There, they found a man lying beneath the train's engine. Miraculously, the man was conscious and alert.

Authorities say that it looked like the man suffered only superficial injuries. He was alert and talking with paramedics when he was taken from the scene by ambulance.

Police stopped short of saying the man, believed to be in his 60's, is homeless, but say he is known to frequent the area and is familiar to police.

The man's name was not released.
