PEORIA, Ill. -- Peoria comes in at 62nd on Milken Institute’s Best Performing Cities List for 2012.

That ranking is up from 68th last year and 87th in 2010. The study compares job, wage, and technology performance metrics over a 5 year period to capture the building blocks of a region.

Greater Peoria experienced an increase in GDP Growth compared to last year, while job growth and wages/salaries remained relatively unchanged from 2011.

Peoria had the second best performance of cities considered to be in its peer group, ranking only behind Fort Wayne, Indiana. Fort Wayne ranked 59th in the study.

Technology making a comeback is a major reason for Peoria's ascension in the ranks. Greater Peoria was recently ranked third for High Tech Job Growth according to Technology Works, a West Coast technology advocacy group.
