Peoria schools participate in Great Central U.S. Shake Out

PEORIA, Ill. -- There is a whole lot of shaking going on in some Peoria County schools.

Thursday is the Great Central U.S. Shake Out to promote earthquake awareness.

Participants took part in a simulated earthquake drill Thursday morning by practicing the "drop, cover, and hold on" method to be used in case of an earthquake.

The annual event is sponsored by the City/County Health Department and the Emergency Management Agency.

"Again, something not to be afraid of but something to be safe and beware that we do have earthquakes here in Central Illinois, they are much more minor but something we always want to be considerate of," said Sue Malahy, Principal of Northmoor Primary School.

Although rare, earthquakes can still occur in Illinois, which lies along the New Madrid Seismic Fault.
