PEORIA, Ill. -- The Peoria City Council is forging a new working relationship with the Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce.

Members of the chamber and council had a joint leadership meeting on Wednesday.

The two sides discussed the importance of the Peoria promise project, which grants scholarships to area students.

They also discussed ways to enhance communication between local government and the business community.

"The chamber works hard to be the voice of business in the Peoria area and its critical that we have a good conversation and dialogue with the city on those key issues that are going to materially impact our success going forward," Chairman of the Peoria Chamber of Commerce, Brent Eichelberger.

Mayor Jim Ardis said the partnership is vital because much of the council's agenda involves existing businesses and future development.
