PEORIA, Ill. -- Recent reports from the Department of Children and Family Services show that child abuse reports are up in downstate Illinois.

April is child abuse prevention month and officials at the Crittenton Centers are hoping to change the way people think with their fifth annual "Pinwheels for Prevention" garden.

The centers' President, Cindy Fischer, hopes the garden will not only educate the children, but their parents as well.

"When we have stresses in our lives, we can't take it out on our children and we need to protect them. That is our responsibility and our role as parents and adults," said Fischer.

During the month of April, WEEK/WHOI will be collecting donations for the Crittenton Crisis Nursery.
