PEORIA, Ill. -- April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Crittenton Centers is marking the occasion with a special event.

Tuesday morning, the agency welcomed residents and special guests its annual Pinwheels for Prevention Garden.

Officials said the pinwheel represents efforts to change the way people think about prevention.

The goal is to raise awareness and implement strategies and programs before abuse and neglect occurs.

"I hope that they take away awareness on what is happening in our community and what we are trying to do here at the Crittenton Centers, to be able to educate and protect to be safe and their family," said Hope McAllister, Crittenton Center Board Chair.
