PEORIA, Ill. -- A major extension of a popular Peoria intersection is in the works.

Thursday night, Peoria City Councilman Casey Johnson met with residents to discuss the future extension of Pioneer Parkway.

The non-funded project has been in the planning stages for several years.

City officials said they are now designing the first phase of the project which would extend the road from Allen Road to Villa Lake Drive.

They are hoping public input will help them determine the best plan for a new intersection at Allen road.

"Allen is a pretty major road that tees with Pioneer Parkway, which is another one," said Johnson. "From the speed of cars, traffic count, and those kind of things, we just want to get input before anything does get built."

The final project would extend the road to Trigger Road and add a new interchange at Illinois Route 6.

Johnson said they will be looking for grants in the near future to fund the work.

A start date has not been set for construction.
