Police capture suspect in Tuesday afternoon bank robbery

BLOOMINGTON, Ill -- Bloomington Police are investigating a robbery that occurred Tuesday afternoon at Commerce Bank, 120 N. Center Street. 

The suspect was described as a white man, about 6 foot tall, skinny build, in his 50's, beige cap, brown or dark green coat and jeans.

Police say the suspect passed a note to the teller demanding money. No weapon was displayed. The suspect left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot to the south.

A subject matching the suspect's description was later seen entering the Huck's Convenient Store at 102 West Oakland Avenue. Officers spoke to the subject and determined that they were the suspect in the robbery.

This suspect was taken into custody without incident. The money taken from the bank was located on the suspect at the time of his arrest.

Taken into custody was Clifton T. Smith, 49, of Bloomington. There were no other suspects involved in this incident.  Smith with be transported to McLean County Jail after questioning.
