Handicapped drivers are going to have to pay for parking or face a much bigger fine.

A new law went into effect January 1, forcing most drivers with handicapped placards to pay when they park at a meter.

Peoria Police have used the last month to educate drivers of the new law but starting Saturday they will be issuing tickets.

The only drivers exempt from the law are those with yellow-and-gray striped handicap parking placards.
