BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- New details are emerging about Friday's pileup on Interstate 55 that involved at least 40 cars and blocked the highway for several hours.

The initial accident involved a semi-trailer that spun out near the intersection of Interstate 55 and Oakland Avenue.

State police then say a second semi tried to avoid the first and was hit by a van.

Two other cars that were stopped to avoid accidents were also hit from behind by separate vehicles.

Seventeen people in all were treated and released from area hospitals.

One person remains in the hospital, but their condition is unknown.
