NORMAL, Ill. -- Illinois State Police are investigating an attempted theft at the Hancock Stadium construction site in Normal.

The incident happened late Tuesday night and has campus police tightening patrols around the stadium.

Police said one or more suspects tried to steal copper pipes worth more than $1,800.

Police are unsure how much the culprits actually took, just that the pipes that were left are damaged beyond use.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Charlie Summers said construction sites always pose a risk for theft.

Summers said, "We have our security team doing patrols plus our officers doing patrols as they have been. It's no different than any time else we have big construction jobs going on on campus. That's something that we face that risk anytime we have construction going on."

Summers says those involved face burglary and theft charges.
