PEORIA, Ill. -- Peoria cops will soon be patrolling the halls of District 150's high schools.

The district had been using armed school resource officers to patrol high schools, but the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board said that is illegal.

The board cites a federal law which prohibits anyone from carrying a firearm on school property unless it is being carried by a police officer.

District 150 said the school resource officers will keep their jobs for now, but will not carry guns.

Peoria Police will help in patrolling the schools, and the district expects to enter a formal agreement in the future.
