PEORIA, Ill. -- Police are urging people to be extra cautious with their belongings.

If you want to warm your car up before you leave, use a remote start, or lock the car with a second set of keys.

Always lock the doors to your home, and leave lights on in the house even when you're not there.

Police also have a warning for your post-hristmas trash.

"It's smart not to put a 60" TV box out in your yard, or at the curb for a week. Keep those in your garage or in your house, off to the side, and put them out on garbage day, so you're not advertising your new appliances or big purchases," said Captain Mike Eddelmon.

Also, be wary of scams while last minute shopping.

If anyone approaches you in a parking lot asking for help, call police and let them assist instead.
