Pontiac Police officer killed in Wednesday night crash

PONTIAC, Ill. -- A Pontiac police officer is dead following a crash in Livingston County.

Police said Officer Casey Kohlmeier's patrol vehicle was stopped in a median turn-around on Interstate 55 near Illinois 23 when it was hit by a northbound vehicle just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

Officer Kohlmeier, 29, and his K-9, Draco, were both killed in the crash.

The driver of the other vehicle was hospitalized. Their name and condition is not being released at this time.

Illinois State Police are investigating the crash.

Officer Kohlmeier was assigned to the Livingston County Proactive Unit. He was on duty as a patrol officer at the time of the crash.

He had been with the department since 2007. He also served in the U.S. Air Force and aspired to join the FBI. Kohlmeier was not married but he is leaving behind his parents, police team and many more.

It has been 19 years since another Pontiac Police member was killed in the line of duty.

Funeral services for Officer Casey Kohlmeier will be held Saturday at noon at the Pontiac Township High School Auditorium.
