WASHINGTON, DC -- President Obama has nominated Thomas Perez to the position of Secretary of Labor.
Born to Dominican parents, Perez currently leads the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.
He previously served as Maryland's Labor Secretary.
Perez is expected to gain strong support from labor groups and those pushing for immigration reform.
If confirmed, Perez would replace Hilda Solis, who resigned in January.
Perez is expected to be confirmed, but Republicans are expected to question an eternal squabble in the Civil Rights office.
