Preventing child abuse is a social responsibility

April is child abuse awareness month, and officials with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is remind every Illinoisian of their social responsibility to report suspected child abuse or neglect.

"DCFS receives, investigates and acts upon a report of child abuse or neglect every five minutes, child sex abuse every two hours, and a child death by abuse or neglect every day-and-a-half," Richard H. Calica, DCFS Director.

Still, as many as 100 thousand cased go unreported every year.

Anyone who suspects a child is in danger of abuse or neglect is urged to call 1-800-25-ABUSE.
