PRINCEVILLE, Ill. -- A Princeville family is without a home following a Monday afternoon house fire.

Six departments responded to the residence at 604 South Walnut at around 3:15 p.m. Monday.

Crews arrived to discover heavy flames from the basement up into the attic.

Home Owner Jane Gunter and her two children were not home at the time of the fire.

The house is considered a total loss.

"That's usually what happens in these older houses," said First Asst. Chief Mike Murphy of Akron-Princeville Fire Deptartment. "Once you have a fire in the basement, it will find a way to the attic and shoot straight up. Attic fires are one of the hardest. They are hard to get to. We had two ceilings. The guys worked really, really hard and we got it out without complete structural collapse and everybody's safe, no one injured."

The residents are staying with family.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
