PEORIA, Ill. -- Peoria Public Works officials said they have learned plenty of lessons from previous snow storms and that preparation is key.

It is hard to predict when that first heavy blanket of snow will fall here in the Midwest. Public Works crews said they began planning in August and September for snowstorms that could hit anytime.

Public Works Manager David Haste said early planning helps them stay ready for severe winter weather.

"Our routings, our mapping process we go over, we add any new streets that we may have gotten through some kind of construction,” Haste said.

The Public Works Department relies on temporary employees in addition to its regular crew to get through the winter months.

Haste said they will hire about 26 temporary workers over the coming weeks who will be trained for snow removal.
