Quinn terminates state's contract with AFSCME

CHICAGO -- Governor Pat Quinn has taken the unprecedented action of terminating the state's contract with the state's largest employee's union; AFSCME.

The Governor and ASFCME have been butting heads for months over contract issues.

Union members have shown up at Quinn appearances to boo and cat-call him.

Tuesday, the Governor officially terminated the state's contract with the 40,000 members of AFSCME Local 31, which actually ended last June but had been extended three times.

The union released a statement saying that terminating the contract would have little immediate effect, since existing terms and conditions remain the same under state law.

A spokesman for the Governor said Quinn had terminated the contract because AFSCME never offered any proposals to help deal with the state's financial crisis in eleven months of bargaining.
