SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Democratic House Speaker Mike Madigan has agreed to defer talks on pension costs in order to pass legislation, fixing Illinois' $96 billion pension deficit.
The cost shift of downstate teacher's pensions to local school boards has been a sticking point for republicans.
In DuPage County on Friday, Governor Pat Quinn called the move a breakthrough in pension reform talks.
"I think we saw in Washington with the debate over the fiscal cliff that people, in order to solve a problem, often times have to make reasonable compromises, make changes in their original position in order to get an outcome that benefits the public," said Governor Pat Quinn.
Governor Quinn will meet with legislative leaders Saturday.
He says he wants a pension reform bill on his desk by midnight on Tuesday.
