PEORIA, Ill -- As time continues to run out for lawmakers to reach an agreement avoiding the fiscal cliff.
Former Peoria Congressman and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood spoke at Peoria's Rotary Club meeting Friday.
He says the cliff is significant not only because it will affect tax payers... It will affect every federal agency that is funded with tax money, including the department of transportation.
He says he is optimistic the president and house speaker John Boehner will reach an agreement.
"Speaker Boehner, prior to being elected speaker, really put together the 'No Child Left Behind' bill with liberal Democrats," LaHood said. "He knows how to negotiate. And the agreement that's in place today was negotiated by these two men. They're going to work together. There's just too much at stake."
He says Boehner has faced contentious negotiations like this one before and succeeded.
