EDWARDS, Ill. -- Battles of World War II came back to life Saturday at Sommer Park.

More than 400 re-enactors suited up in authentic World War II uniforms to play the part of American and German soldiers.

About 50 original and reproduced vehicles were used in the mock battle.

Organizers said the display is a special way to honor our veterans.

"Some of them cry just when they feel the uniform again or from riding in that jeep," said event coordinator, Scott Thompson. "We've had a couple in a tank and a half-track. We want to bring that back for them while they are still with us, and we want to teach the public what the cost of our freedom really is."

The event continues Sunday until 3 pm.

Veterans are encouraged to attend.
